Outdoor Climbing Meet-Up: The Playground 9/22/2024

We will be meeting at the trailhead off of West Camino Cielo at 9am (directions below). Our limited library of shoes will be available, as well as a few harnesses and helmets to share. If you need to borrow gear, please try to show up on time. 

We will also provide ropes and set up a couple anchors for everyone to use. Even if you aren’t interested in climbing, you are more than welcome to join us for the hike and hang out with us at the crag!

From highway 154, make a left onto West Camino Cielo and drive for a little over two miles. You’ll be looking for a turnout and trailhead on the ocean side, next to a telephone pole and across the road from a large gate. Parking is anywhere in front of the trailhead or along the road where a vehicle can safely fit. Keep an eye out for our blue Honda CRV.

From there, we’ll be hiking for about 20 minutes. The trail has both uphill and downhill sections which are short but steep, with some scrambling over rocks to get to where we will be climbing. We will hike out as a group and can take the rougher sections as slowly as we need to.

What to bring:

Plenty of water, a snack, shoes appropriate for hiking, sun protection, and any personal climbing gear you have.

Be advised that there aren’t restrooms or reliable cell service at this location. Plan accordingly for a day out in nature! We also recommend dressing in layers—the temperature can shift quickly from very cold to very hot—and wearing long pants while on the trail to protect yourself against thorns and poison oak.
